La Bohème
November 4 -12
La Bohème is a four act opera composed by Giacomo Puccini set in Paris around the 1830’s. This story tells a tale of love and loss between two people, Rodolfo and Mìmi. They were swoon by each other the moment they met, and knew they were meant to be. However, when a terrible sickness falls over Mìmi their dreams of being together shatter. A selfless Rodolfo leaves her so she can be with a rich man who will provide for her. In her final moments she realizes she needs to be with her Rodolfo, so him and his four friends fight to do anything to keep his one true love alive, but their efforts are wasted and Mìmi has already let go. This performance is one of the most frequently performed operas worldwide and appeals to a variety of audiences from newcomers to enthusiasts of the opera.

Steal a Pencil for me
January 25 - 30
To say “they beat the odds” is an understatement. In this intimate opera, Cohen and Brevoort tell the true story of a group of Dutch Jews who are deported to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in the last year of World War II. Surrounded by horrors of the Holocaust, Jaap and Manja Polak’s already fragile marriage dissolves as he turns his attentions to Ina Soep. The love that Jaap and Ina share helps sustain them through the daily challenges of concentration camp life as they secretly pass love letters to each other. As librettist Deborah Brevoort so beautifully states, “It was a simple story, to be sure – of ordinary breakfasts, and butter for bread – but it nevertheless held great power and ultimately enabled them to survive. When everything is taken away, only the essential remains.”

May 5 -13

This opera is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV. In this opera by Giuseppe Verdi, Sir Falstaff is a knight who finds that he has run out of money and comes up with a scheme to seduce two married women who have rich husbands in order to get access to their wealth. Falstaff sends them identical letters and after talking with each other, the wives find out Falstaff’s plan. The two women seek vengeance with a series of tricks to punish Falstaff for his disobeyment to honor. This witty comedy will have audiences on their toes and guessing what will happen next.
